What is Restorative Muscle Therapy?
|
The Restorative Muscle Therapist finds what's not moving and gets it to move. The work is founded on physical therapist Nate Schulman's theory that musculo-skeletal pain and movement disorders can be relieved and often corrected by relaxing, releasing, and re-lengthening tight muscles and connective tissue. By unlocking muscles and connective tissue, RMT frees the body and directly addresses the problem of pain, allowing increased circulation and improved mobility.
Who needs Restorative Muscle Therapy (RMT)?
The short answer is that just about everyone would benefit, since RMT increases circulation and enhances mobility. The most typical RMT client is a person who has struggled with musculo-skeletal pain or with limited mobiity. Common complaints include back pain, neck pain, arthritis, muscle pulls, pinched nerves, neuralgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis. Often, RMT clients first come in because of pain that other interventions were unable to help. Most come back for regular follow-up because of how good they feel when they continue with regular treatments. Current clients range from age 6 to 86 and include competitive athletes, hard-working professionals and tradesmen, musicians, executives, entrepreneurs, and busy moms, dads, and kids.
How does it work?
The primary tool of Restorative Muscle Therapy (RMT) is the forearm. Restorative Muscle Therapists drape a towel over the area of the body where they are working to better grasp the muscle. The therapy does not slide over the skin, but rather is working beneath the skin in the layers of connective tissue and muscle. Restorative Muscle Therapists primarily use their forearms to sink into taught muscles, following pathways of tension and releasing bound muscle groups and connective tissue, opening the flow of the body's energy.
Minor and acute ailments are typically resolved within 3 treatment sessions, whereas chronic and more series issues may require more time to resolve. Typically, by the 3rd session, a client will know if the treatment will be effective for them. To address an issue, plan to start with 3 sessions, scheduled between 3 to 5 days apart. After that, the client and therapist will decide together on an appropriate schedule. We recommend a minimum on monthly maintenance treatments to support optimal mobility.
Clients should wear comfortable, loose clothing during the 30- to 60- minute treatments.

Why was it called Schulman Therapy, and why the name change?
Schulman Therapy was developed by Nate Schulman over the course of his 50-year physical therapy practice and refined by Michael Canann during his 25 years of practice. Jenna McCarty, Michael's protege, bases her work on the Schulman method. Jenna found that Schulman Therapy, though extremely effective, was too intense for some of her more sensitive clients. She has adapted the technique with the goal of maintaining or increasing effectiveness, while also approaching each person uniquely, reading the muscle/body-response and following the muscle's lead on how much it is ready to let go at a time. Thus, Restorative Muscle Therapy is born out of Schulman Therapy.
